She mimics the controlled chaos of free jazz, adopting the dissonance and odd time signatures through beats and glitching synths. Meshing IDM with R&B, jazz and drill influences, “James’s tracks have a paradoxical crafted deconstruction,” writes critic Timi Sotire. One of the most exciting new artists to enter the fray of IDM is Loraine James, a London-based producer and one of the few prominent queer Black women in electronic music. And yet, despite the label, what the genre truly represents, from Aphex Twin to Jlin, is the cutting edge of progressive electronic music - challenging, sometimes abrasive art that transcends typical sonic boundaries. IDM, or “intelligent dance music,” is an icky-sounding genre, one that conjures images of esoteric knob-twiddlers and pretentious scenesters.
Lyrically, Clairo expresses a longing for emotional connection, surely a relatable sentiment for an online generation emerging from a yearlong pandemic. Featuring backup vocals from Lorde and the subtle orchestral flourishes that are Antonoff’s signature, the melancholy song channels the spirit of 1970s soft rock à la Joni Mitchell and Cat Stevens. Clairo’s excellent 2019 debut, “Immunity,” shifted toward a more conventional indie sound best exemplified by the standout breakout track “ Bags.”Ĭlairo’s new, Antonoff-produced single, titled “Blouse,” marks yet another sonic shift. The latest artist to team up with Antonoff is Claire Cottrill - better known as Clairo - a Gen Z superstar who rose to fame after her song “Pretty Girl” went viral on YouTube (74 million views!). “ladies stop hiring this man to produce your records i am begging you please for the love of god try something else,” wrote one Twitter user. On Thursday, the great Diana Ross announced that she, too, was teaming up with Antonoff. In the past couple of years alone, he’s been the go-to producer for a multitude of A-list pop acts, including Lana Del Rey, Lorde, Taylor Swift, the Chicks, St. Producer Jack Antonoff seems both determined and well-positioned to reshape the sound of popular music in the 2020s - in fact he seems well on his way. To mark this year’s Pride, serpentwithfeet released an excellent cover of the 1963 Lesley Gore hit “ You Don’t Own Me” for a campaign to encourage LGBTQ people to travel freely “on their own terms.” However, the alternative version, titled “You Don’t Own Me / Canopy,” feels truer to Wise’s sound: a gospel-inflected reimagining of the original that both subverts and modernizes its message of empowerment. “This is the blessing of my thirties, I’m spending less time worrying and more time recounting the love,” he sings on “ Fellowship.” It’s filled with songs about friendship, love and the joys of getting older. In March, Wise released “Deacon,” his second LP as serpentwithfeet and an early contender for the best album of 2021. “It’s like Nina Simone and Frank Ocean,” according to the video’s top comment on YouTube. Wise’s voice is immediately distinctive and impossible to ignore. In 2018, Josiah Wise released a video for an experimental gospel epic titled “bless ur heart” under the moniker serpentwithfeet. The result is a stunning new Pride anthem and updated version of a classic rally cry for freedom and justice. On her cover of “Declare Independence,” she overhauls Björk’s menacing original version, replacing its abrasive industrial synths with warm harmonies and a danceable reggaeton beat. Dedicated to embodying anti-racism in her art and performances, Pimienta described her last album, “Miss Colombia,” as a “series of cynical love letters” to her country of birth, in which she boldly tackles issues of misogyny and anti-Blackness in Latin America. Pimienta, who won the prestigious Polaris Music Prize in 2017 and was shortlisted again in 2019, has never shied away from her politics.

In a tweet, Pimienta, who identifies as queer, shared an all-caps message with a series of flags, signalling not only her solidarity with the LGBTQ transgender communities, but also with Colombian and Palestinian people struggling for freedom and dignity in their homelands. On June 14, Colombian-Canadian artist Lido Pimienta, who in the past has expressed ambivalent feelings about Toronto’s Pride events, shared a new cover of Björk’s 2007 song “ Declare Independence” as part of Spotify’s Pride campaign.
Pride is a celebration of the LGBTQ community, but it’s also a political movement that seeks to affirm equality and dignity for all, while simultaneously struggling against intersecting systems of oppression.
